Solution for injection for prevention of hypocalcaemia
COMPOSITION
Active substances: Calcium gluconate 10 g; Sodium chloride 0.9 g
Excipients (boric acid, distilled water) ad 100 ml
PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION
Ions of calcium are essential for the normal function of physiological processes, being involved in skeleton and teeth formation and in prevention of rickets in young stock. Low levels of calcium in the body cause tetany by hypocalcaemia. Calcium ions improve the myocardial activity and blood coagulation, controls the cell and vessel permeability preventing edema.

Horses, cattle, sheep, goats, swine, dogs and cats
INDICATIONS
In exhausted and hypocalcemic animals, which present paresis, paraplegia (ante- and postpartum), milk fever, anaphylaxis, rashes, tetany, but also in rickets, osteomalacia, hemorrhagic and toxic conditions. It is recommended to use as general tonic.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
Do not inject the product intramuscularly because it produces lumps.
ADVERSE REACTIONS
The rapid i.v. administration or the administration of a too worm or a too cold product may cause tremors, hyper salivation, vomiting, sweating, hypotension. High doses of calcium increase the risk of arrhythmia. Nodules at the intramuscular injection site may occur in swine.
METHOD OF ADMINISTRATION
The product is administered by slow injection, strictly intravenously, using the following doses:
– in adult horses and cattle: 200 – 500 ml/day, for 2 – 4 days
– in sheep, goats, foals, calves, swine: 20 – 100 ml/day, for 2 – 3 days
– in dogs, cats, lambs, kids, piglets: 2 – 10 ml/day, repeated after 24 – 48 hours.
If necessary, in swine the product can be also injected deeply intramuscularly, dividing the dose in 2-4 separate injection sites.
WARNINGS
Assess correctly the animal’s body weight in order to avoid the under- or overdoses. The product should have the body temperature when administered.
Caution in combination with tetracycline, fluoride preparations, calcium channel blockers, digitalis. Avoid association with high doses of vitamin D.
The intravenous injection is discontinued if tremors, hyper salivation or vomiting occur.
In animals with hypercalciuria or kidney stone in history, the product is administered with caution.
